Because it's just a shortening of the name?

Last century, Young's Best was usually worse than their ordinary bitter.

But when it was good, it was very, very good.

(I presume this was because it was harder to look after.)

Not had the opportunity to check if this is still the case.

I suspect - but I don't KNOW - that the term originated from when brewing was a much more local and seasonal industry.

Bitter was pronounced "Best Bitter" by the master brewer when he was able to combine the optimum blend of (local) ingredients and the output matched his taste requirements.

Five seconds on google and wikipedia, you lazy arse...

"Strength between 4.2% and 4.7% abv. In the United Kingdom bitter above 4.2% abv accounted for just 2.9% of pub sales in 2003. The disappearance of weaker bitters from some brewers' rosters means "best" bitter is actually the weakest in the range"

Well if it was called "Worst" Bitter you'd never buy any would you?

Was originally the name given to ones stronger than light and ordinary, but below strong.

As bitters have got stronger over the years, Best usually applies to the weaker ones in a brewery's range now
